01/28 (Saturday):
2012 Shelby County Reads Kick-Off

Join us at the Grover Museum to kick off the 2012 series of Shelby County Reads' events on Saturday, January 28. The opne house will feature a space-themed exhibit and activities for children led by Rick Crosslin from the Children's Museum of Indianapolis.


February- March (Thursdays & Fridays):
We Chose the Moon!

"We Chose the Moon" is a weekly series of activities that helps students understand the physical characteristics of the moon, simple concepts of rocketry, and space exploration. The programming includes hands-on and computer-based learning using NASA educational resources. Students will also have the opportunity to view samples of lunar rocks and meteorites and to learn about rock and mineral identification. Registration is requested so supplies can be provided for all. Please contact Pamela Weakley for more information and to register - 317-398-7121 ext. 239.


02/03 (Friday):
Across the Universe Teen Book Discussion

Teens, joins us for the discussion of Across the Universe by Beth Revis on Friday, February 3 at the Bookmark located by Three Sisters Books and Gifts. Malissa Hostetler-Koenig, young adult services manager at the library, will be leading the discussion. Copies of the books are available at the youth circulation desk at the library.

02/06 (Monday) : We Choose the Moon!

Join library staff members, Diane Anderson and Pamela Weakley, to watch video footage on the big screen from the Apollo 11 mission. The library will also have lunar and meteorite samples on display for attendees to view.


02/09 (Thursday):
October Sky (also titled "Rocket Boys") Book Discussion

Discuss October Sky by Homer H. Hickam, Jr. with the community at Three Sisters Books and Gifts. Everyone is welcome to attend! Light refreshments will be served. Carolyn Statler will be leading the discussion.

Space Music and "October Sky" Film Screening

Rocket Boys was the basis for the major motion picture October Sky from Universal Studios. Enjoy a brief set of “space-themed” music performed by the Shelby County Community Band and watch October Sky at the Strand Theatre on Sunday, February 12 at 2pm. This is a free event. Reservations are not required to attend.

Nasa Astronaut Visit

Susan Cambell Bartoletti

The 2012 season of Shelby County Reads will feature a special visit from NASA Astronaut, Jerry Ross, and his wife, Karen, Manager of Food and Product Support with United Space Alliance on March 14, 2012 at Shelbyville High School. Karen will present at 6pm in the SHS Golden Bear Room (next to the library and near Breck Auditorium). Jerry will speak at 7pm in the SHS Breck Auditorium. A free ticket is required to attend each presentation. They will be available on a first come, first serve basis at the following locations: Shelby County Reads' events, the Shelbyville-Shelby County Public Library, and Three Sisters Books and Gifts. Awards Presentation

Applaud our Shelby County Reads’ writing contest winners. Recipients from each age group will have the opportunity to read their award winning essays and pick up their prizes.
